New Year’s Eve—the grand finale of the holiday season—is going to be a big night, and ringing it in with style may just set the tone for the next year. So as the calendar counts down, prepare to look polished and pressed for First Night 2013. Here’s how.
Dapper, dashing cashmere or melton wool topcoats complete a formal look. For a rugged but refined approach, go with a pea coat. If the weather is warm, opt for just a tweed or worsted wool blazer. Some guys are wearing diamond-quilted nylon vests as mid layers under their jackets; this lends a sporty but sophisticated feel. While I generally distance myself from the dandy look, New Year’s Eve does call for a dose of exaggerated elegance. First Night is the night to pull out all the stops with a velvet blazer or richly colored trousers.
For a final flourish, add a silk pocket square that subtly contrasts the necktie. If the tie is dark, solid or subdued, shoot for a foulard, checked or paisley print to catch the eye. As for how to wear a pocket square, I prefer folding it into a neat rectangle (about the same size as the pocket), with just the squared edges peaking out.
