Designer Rebecca Minkoff’s first taste of success came in 2001, when an “I love New York” tee from her first, five-piece collection was spied by millions on Jay Leno and in the pages of US Weekly. After spending the next few years sewing the tees on the floor of her New York apartment to meet the subsequent demand, an exhilarated Minkoff decided that handbags would be her next design foray. And the rest, as they say, is history: Minkoff has since almost single-handedly brought sexy back to the handbag—one of her most coveted styles, the Morning After Bag, is collected by women all over the country. Rebecca Minkoff sample sales have been known to generate frenzy amid her New York City fans, with lines wrapping around the block. Minkoff didn’t stop at bags, either, soon adding clothing, shoes, men’s accessories and even diaper bags to her burgeoning brand. Indeed, Minkoff seems an irrepressible force of nature, so it’s no surprise she’s got some passionate habits to fuel her. Here, she shares a few with MYHABIT.
What’s the one habit you have that changed your life for the better?
I got into the habit of riding my bike to work every morning, which is really amazing.
What’s the one habit you have that’s not so great?
I have a bit of a weakness for croissants.
What’s your naughtiest habit?
Tweezing my grays!
What’s your not-so-secret style habit?
I only carry handbags from my lines.
What’s a habit you wish you had?
I’d love to get in the habit of waking up a little earlier every morning and hitting the gym before I hit the office.
What style habits should every woman adopt?
Play with colors in your wardrobe, don’t be afraid of a little sparkle and be yourself. As far as rules to break, I’d say that black and blue do go together, comfort isn’t always more important, and lip liner is very rarely okay.
What’s your handbag habit?
Designing them! Inside my Rebecca Minkoff bag, you’ll find my BlackBerry, gum, chapstick and all the other essentials a lady needs.
