For interior design superstar Thom Filicia, success and recognition came quickly. After graduating from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design, Filicia worked for many noted design firms, including Parish-Hadley Inc., Robert Metzger Interiors, and Bilhuber & Associates. By 1998, ready to put his top-notch experience to use, he opened his own company, Thom Filicia Inc. His sophisticated yet warm New American style earned the designer instant acclaim and caught the eye of a few connected television producers. A few short years later, Filicia joined the cast of the beloved Emmy Award-winning series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy as the resident design expert charged with completely making over the homes and lives of style-challenged men.
The phenomenal response to the show provided Filicia with a number of other television opportunities where his bright and friendly personality could really shine. From “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” to his own programs on The Style Network and HGTV, it is clear the interior designer is a bona fide TV star. He hasn’t, however, let that slow down his design career. Filicia continues to design hotels and interiors, write books, and earn accolades from the likes of House Beautiful and House & Garden. He’s even managed to find time to launch his very own home collection. While that would exhaust most people, Filicia remains as hardworking and busy as ever, sharing his traditional-with-a-twist aesthetic with design lovers the world over. We were lucky enough to catch up with him recently to discuss some of his best (and worst) habits.
What’s the one habit you have that changed your life for the better?
Keeping a pen and paper next to my bed so that when I wake up in the middle of the night with ideas, I can jot them down. Knowing that the information has been saved allows me to quickly fall back to sleep and I have a jumpstart on my ideas in the morning.
What’s the one habit you have that’s not so great?
I travel a lot for work and tend to pack in the dark mornings before my flights. I have a habit of packing two left shoes or forgetting one shoe all together.
What’s your naughtiest habit?
Secretly texting and emailing on the plane when you’re not supposed to.
What’s your secret (or not-so-secret) décor habit?
My apartment and house are in a constant state of pillow mayhem because of my obsession with changing my decorative pillows.
What’s a habit every woman should have to stay sane?
At least four times a year, go out with your gay boyfriends and live it up! Works for me!
What three home decorating ideas should every woman adopt?
High-gloss paint in a daring color, grass cloth with a silver backing, and silk velvet. Chic.
