Elegant, refined, with just the right amount of sex appeal—Yigal Azrouël’s creations really do speak for themselves. It’s hardly any wonder the talented self-taught designer has gained such a considerable following over the years. Azrouël may have launched his eponymous collection in 1998, but he’s hardly rested on his laurels and perfect draping skills. From creating new diffusion lines (including his coveted—and lauded—men’s collection) to helping pave the way for the growth of the Meatpacking District in Manhattan in the early eighties, Azrouël seems to always be on to the new and next, much like his stunning dresses and smart outerwear.
So what makes the Israeli-American designer tick? We recently chatted with him about some of his best and not-so-great habits, from exercising to texting.
What’s the one habit you have that changed your life for the better?
I recently started running and developed a great exercise regime. It has really changed my life, especially when I am stressed. It’s a time for me to be alone with my thoughts.
What’s the one habit you have that’s not so great?
I’m always on my Blackberry. I’d like to be able to ignore it from time to time.
What’s your naughtiest habit?
Texting while talking to somebody.
What’s your secret (or not-so-secret) style habit?
I don’t usually shop specific labels. I find that I am much more comfortable in a T-shirt and jeans that I could have picked up at a flea market. Style should come from within, and I think you should search to buy clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
What’s a habit you wish you had?
I wish I could be more organized balancing my personal life and work.
What three habits should every guy should adopt?
Learn to surf, create an exercise plan, and live in the moment.
What three habits should every guy break?
Smoking, biting your nails, overstressing.
